Beagle Training

There are many articles and books on Beagle training available on the Internet and in book stores. Since this breed is very popular nowadays in the USA and abroad, many people who decide to buy a Beagle puppy face a problem of socializing, housebreaking, and training it. Beagles possess a very gentle disposition and lack aggression towards humans and other dogs. A poorly trained Beagle is not dangerous, like many large and potentially aggressive breeds. Training a Beagle is important for its own sake. Having a poorly trained Beagle in the house is a very unpleasant experience. If not taught to obey, these dogs may become dominating, manipulative, destructive, and hyperactive. Many Beagles howl when left alone even for a short time.

Like all hounds, Beagles are very smart, inquisitive, and curious. Even if a Beagle was never used for hunting, it possesses a strong hunting instinct that makes it follow any interesting smell and chase any moving object. It’s very important to teach the Beagle at least some basic commands to save its life. Even after a professional course of Beagle training, a hound can never be reliable. A Beagle can take off after a cat or a new smell and get lost. To prevent accidents, never take a Beagle for a walk unleashed.

Beagle training is often a challenge for a novice and inexperienced owner. Though all Beagles are naturally intelligent and communicative, they may be stubborn and reluctant to obey, if they are bored or don’t see any sense in a command. For many generations, Beagles were selected for the long chase of prey. It resulted in very determined and single-minded dogs able to make decisions. Only when properly motivated, Beagles can do everything required of them.

Since every dog breed was selected for a specific task, a purebred dog should not be asked to do a job it’s not suited for. For instance, Beagles and other hunting dogs are neither territorial nor protective. If left in the yard to guard the property, they will not object a stranger coming in, but will be glad to meet a new person. No Beagle training can make these dogs efficient guards.
